Internships and Career Preparation

A successful career starts when you’re a student.

A lot of the experience and planning you need to thrive in your career should happen long before graduation. That’s where our Career Center comes in. We’re dedicated to your individual, professional success.

Our team is available to help you find an internship, prepare for graduate school, and begin your career. Whether you’re researching internship opportunities, preparing for interviews, or exploring different employers and locations, we’re with you every step of the way.

Career Services

We offer career services, both in-person and virtually, to help you learn about the nature of different careers, the training they require, job outlook, earning potential, and other valuable information.

  • Personal assessment

Our staff meets one-on-one with students to perform a personal assessment of you and your goals. This assessment, coupled with occupational, employer, and geographic research, can provide valuable information that will help you make a wise occupational choice and set realistic career goals.

This required course for UJ students includes topics like: career search, résumé building, study abroad, and experiential education.

  • Professional mentoring and job shadowing

These services are available with community partners and alumni in various career sectors. For professional mentoring, please fill out this form. For job shadowing, please fill out this form to begin the process.

  • On-campus career fairs

Each year, we have a fall career fair, employer tables and on-campus interview opportunities. These events give students the chance to meet employers.

This website is an institution-verified digital page for each student to showcase their achievements from enrollment through graduation.

This online career assessment and occupational exploration tool helps you map out a career path. Create an account with your UJ email, and use the registration access code: JC7421

This online system helps you identify your strengths, weakness, and career interests—and then matches your skill gaps and goals with UJ courses.

  • Application preparation

Learn how to build your résumé, cover letter, and LinkedIn Profile. We’ll help you on your job search and make sure you are prepared for your interview.

Our Internship Program helps you get an idea of what it’s like to work in different professions, as well as gain hands-on work experience—all so you can make informed career choices after you graduate. Internships are so valuable to your future success, that many of our programs require one to graduate.

Supervised internships of a semester or more in length are available, both locally in Jamestown, as well in your hometown.

Your faculty advisor will work with you to research potential work experiences. And our Career Center can assist you in setting up your approved internship to earn credits towards your degree. Job shadowing in pre-professional programs is also available for academic internship credit.

Most for-credit internships are managed through the Career Center in Raugust Library. To apply for an internship:

  • Contact careers@uj.edu to set up an approved internship
  • Complete the Internship Application
  • Register for your internship class. This flexible course earns you academic credit for your internship. Students write reflective papers, polish off their resume, and participate in supervisor and student evaluations. Other course work may be required relative to your internship and degree path.
