University of Jamestown Launches Master of Science in Kinesiology – Sport Performance

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The University of Jamestown has launched a new Master of Science in Kinesiology – Sport Performance, expanding the University’s graduate offerings with an online program designed to prepare professionals for the evolving field of human performance.

The 36-credit program combines advanced scientific study with practical application in exercise physiology, biomechanics, strength and conditioning, nutrition, sport psychology, performance assessment and data analysis. Students can further tailor the degree to their career goals through an emphasis in Coaching Leadership or Business Management.

“Sport performance is increasingly driven by research, technology and data, but being successful in this field also requires the ability to translate that knowledge into practice,” said program director Nicole Hochhalter MS, RDN, CSCS. “We designed this program to prepare professionals who understand the science of human performance and know how to apply it to help athletes and clients perform at their best.”

The curriculum prepares students to evaluate performance, interpret data and develop evidence-based training programs for a range of populations and settings. Graduates may pursue opportunities in collegiate and professional athletics, strength and conditioning, tactical performance, private training, rehabilitation, corporate wellness and other areas of human performance.

The program is also designed to assist students in preparing for the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam.

“One of the things I’m most excited about is the range of directions students can take this degree,” Hochhalter said. “Some students want to coach. Others see themselves directing a performance facility, working with tactical populations or building a business of their own. The two emphasis areas allow students to develop additional expertise that supports where they want to go professionally.”

Students pursuing the Coaching Leadership emphasis complete coursework focused on sports communication, contemporary issues in sports leadership, coaching and mentoring. The Business Management emphasis adds graduate coursework in business fundamentals, human resource management and innovation.

Delivered online, the program is designed to provide flexibility for working professionals and students seeking to continue their education while advancing their careers.

“Our goal is not simply to add programs; it is to create opportunities that make sense for our students and for the world they are preparing to enter,” said Dr. Paul Olson, Executive Vice President and Provost. “The MS in Kinesiology – Sport Performance builds on strengths already present at UJ while creating a new pathway for students to turn their interests and experiences into meaningful careers.”
