Bands

Explore our six different instrumental groups and learn about national and international touring.

Make new friends and grow as a performer.

Instrumental groups at UJ are made up of music majors, music minors, and non-majors. In fact, over half of our ensembles are comprised of non-majors!

Tours

Our Wind Ensemble tours nationally (three years) and internationally (every fourth year).

  • National tours feature performances for schools, including outreach concerts for younger children. We typically play along-side the band we’re visiting and have evenings free!
  • International touring is often to Europe and involves plenty of sight-seeing.

The BOPB brings energy to home football and basketball games. The athletic department is very supportive of this group and provides meals for every performance. Members also get a t-shirt, sweatshirt, a water bottle, and warm-weather hat. This group is volunteer and is not for credit.

Looking for a smaller group? In the spring semester, we put together chamber groups for more independent playing, including string players. In the fall, all instrumentalists are invited to play in the pit for our musical.

The University of Jamestown Drumline is The Pride of the Big Orange. This dynamic group performs regularly at home athletic events including volleyball, men’s hockey, and men’s and women’s basketball. Additionally, the group performs for special events on and off campus.

The Jazz Combo is a small group jazz experience that offers a focus on soloing concepts in the small group setting. The group is open to all University of Jamestown students with a high school-level proficiency on their instrument.

The Jazz Ensemble plays a wide variety of repertoire, including classic swing, rock, fusion, and Latin jazz. It offers students opportunities for musical growth through various performing opportunities, including regular concerts, the annual Jazz Knights Ball, and regional tours.

This group is open to all University of Jamestown students with a high school-level proficiency on their instrument. Learn more about percussion at UJ.

This is our main “concert” band that tours! We rehearse four days a week for about an hour. There is no audition requirement. We put on an average of two concerts per semester including our semester concerts, Homecoming, and Commencement. Learn more about percussion at UJ, and see the tour section below for travel information

“Joining the UJ band is not solely about becoming a part of a musical group that will inspire you to be the best musician and instrumentalist you can be. It also means that you become a member of a family that will give you more amazing and unforgettable moments than you could ever imagine.”
