For Kelsey Wilberg, graduating from University of Jamestown is a milestone after overcoming tragedy.

Wilberg attended North Dakota State University and graduated with a degree in university studies and a minor in psychology. In 2013, she became a member of the inaugural Doctor of Physical Therapy program at UJ’s Fargo campus

While pursuing her degree Wilberg gave birth to Tali JoAnn Gilbertson on March 9, 2012. She and Tali’s father had planned to marry when Wilberg finished school.

Wilberg had just completed her first semester at UJ when Tali’s father, died from injuries in a snowmobiling accident on Jan. 22, 2014. Tali was just 1 year old.

“I did not plan be a single mom going into this program. God put in me in this and he is getting me through this,” Wilberg said. “I lifted my worries up to God and he directs us in prayer where we are supposed to go.”

Rather than drop out Wilberg said her classmates and professors really showed her support. Her family and friends all pitched in to give her time to study and work.

“I was able to pull through school with this continuous support of family, friends and teachers,” Wilberg said.

The Doctor of Physical Therapy degree dream was also about providing the best possible life for Tali.

This career path would make her a good provider, she said, but would also ensure she would have enough time to be a good mom.

“I want to be coming home happy every day and creating a positive influence on her,” she said.

Tali, now age 3, will be going to preschool in the fall. She is already playing hockey and gymnastics, and Wilberg said she wants to be there for all of it — making sure she is happy.
