University of Jamestown Writer in Residence and Poet Laureate of North Dakota, Larry Woiwode, had an essay in the Summer, 2019 issue of The American Scholar, the official publication of the Phi Beta Kappa Society in Washington, D.C.

Woiwode’s essay deals with the way a writer finds the voice he or she uses in novels and stories or writing in general. Its title is “Finding Your Voice,” and The American Scholar added a subtitle: “How one writer discovered his when he stopped looking for it and learned instead to listen.” The essay is the lead article in the Book Section of the print version of The American Scholar. An excerpt of another essay was published in the Summer 2018 issue of The American Scholar.

Over the summer he was invited to the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, located in downtown Indianapolis, which houses a large collection of visual arts by American Indians, as well as Western American paintings and sculptures collected by businessman and philanthropist Harrison Eiteljorg. Woiwode spoke and read poetry that represented the western art of ranching in southwestern North Dakota. He also teaches a course on American Indian Religion and Literature at the University of Jamestown.

Woiwode is the author of sixteen books issued by publishing houses in New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco, besides a poetry chapbook brought out by NDSU Press in 2016 and soon sold out. He teaches writing courses, advanced creative writing seminars, and a variety of literature courses at the University of Jamestown.
