My Last Year – Jordan Thomas

Jordan Thomas

My very first move-in day was August 10, 2016, and I was getting help moving into Watson from a bunch of senior volleyball players. As we were finishing up, I overheard a group of them saying how they can’t believe they’re seniors, how fast their four years went by, and wishing it wasn’t so close to being done. I remember rolling my eyes and thinking “Yeah right.”

Boy, was I wrong.

I never would have guessed how fast my time at UJ would go by.

It seems just like yesterday I was getting accustomed to living with roommates, grueling three-hour labs, and living by an incredibly tight schedule as a two-sport athlete. Alongside those, however, were the days and nights I spent making the best friends I’ll ever have.

The relationships I’ve made over my years at UJ are nothing short of amazing. I swear, the most incredible people attend UJ! The University of Jamestown has led me to my wonderful boyfriend, Michael, and two of my great friends that I lived with this past summer, Miranda and Ned. All three have played an incredibly positive role in my life and I can’t thank UJ enough for bringing us together.

My UJ community

I’ve come to learn that the University of Jamestown isn’t just a place to receive an education – it’s a community and my second home. I really do consider my friends here as a second family.

My friends bring out the best in me and make me go out of my comfort zone to become a better person. They’ve challenged me to join campus organizations, to do spontaneous things, and to test how late I can stay up on a Saturday night. I’m now a completely different person than I was four years ago because of them – and I love it.

My life as a senior

Growing up, my dad would always tell me to “Breathe in the moment, because you can never get it back,” and that’s exactly what I have been doing. As a senior, I am not taking anything for granted, because this is the last time I will ever see my friends each and every day, cram for exams, and basically die during three-person pepper in practice.

Accepting that this is my last year is incredibly difficult, because I love being here. Even now, as I’m writing this, I am getting choked up. Every person on this campus has impacted me in such an immense way. I’m never going to forget my time spent at University of Jamestown and all of the wonderful people I have met along the way. As I go into the real world as a University of Jamestown alum, I’ll always remember that it’s a great day to be a Jimmie – no matter where I am.
