Entrepreneur Center to open at UJ in September

Source: JamestownSun.com

The Jamestown Regional Entrepreneur Center is set to open in September, according to University of Jamestown.

The Entrepreneur Center will be a one-stop shop where staff help someone analyze and develop a business idea with partnering agencies and specialists, said Tena Lawrence, UJ vice president of marketing and communications. UJ is providing an office in the Unruh & Sheldon Center with equipment and other support until it is self-sustaining, she said.

“This center is on the campus but it is not our center,” Lawrence said. “It is a community and regional center for the nine counties that are served by the South Central Dakota Regional Council.”

Interviews are nearly completed for the executive director, who will provide leadership for resource development and rural innovation, she said. The director will also seek grants to sustain a $125,000 annual budget, she said.

The city of Jamestown and Stutsman County agreed to a three-year commitment to support the Entrepreneur Center through JSDC to provide a matching contribution to an unspecified USDA grant, she said.

“The director’s role will be crucial for setting the tone,” according to Stacy Bowerman, executive director of the South Central Dakota Regional Council.

Housing the Entrepreneur Center with UJ is a great idea, Bowerman said. Having the support of mechanical engineering, computer and business programs is a resource for testing the viability of ideas and concepts, and then getting an idea off the ground, he said.

“These are people who can figure out how to get a product into production in a cost efficient and cost effective way,” he said. “That is really the logical application and it’s a great fit.”
