UJ Announces New Director for DPT Program

Dr. Nancy Nuzzo, the founding Director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program and Chair of the Department, left the University of Jamestown on May 15, 2017. Dr. Sara Voorhees(pictured right) took over the position the following day.

Dr. Nuzzo developed the Physical Therapy program at UJ and worked to integrate it into the Fargo community. Dr. Paul Olson, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, commented on her time at UJ: “Dr. Nuzzo’s service to the University of Jamestown has been phenomenal. She started from scratch and built a great program that educates wonderful physical therapists and promotes the discipline.”

Dr. Nuzzo served UJ for the past five years. As the founding director of the program, she guided the program through the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) process, assembled an outstanding faculty and staff, and graduated 70 of her 71 DPT students. She will leave UJ to serve as the founding Director of the School of Physical Therapy at Florida Southern College.

“I leave the University of Jamestown Physical Therapy program with pride and sadness. I have enjoyed significant support from the Fargo community, UJ Board of Directors, UJ Administration, and my academic colleagues. I leave the Program in Fargo knowing that Dr. Voorhees will take the Physical Therapy Program to the next level,” said Dr. Nuzzo.

Dr. Voorhees taught Clinical Assessment and Evidence Based Practice at the University of Jamestown since 2013. She holds a Ph.D. in Biomechanics and Movement Science, as well as a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy.

“Dr. Voorhees has been an outstanding faculty member for us for several years and is ready to move into the Program Director role. I am confident that our DPT program will maintain its level of excellence and continue to grow and develop under her leadership,” said Dr. Olson.

To help with her transition, Dr. Voorhees has also been selected to be a Fellow in the American Physical Therapy Association’s 2017-2018 Education Leadership Institute.

“I look forward to continuing the excellent program that Nancy has started. We have a well-rounded curriculum, and we are involved in the Fargo-Moorhead community. Nancy did an exceptional job guiding us to this point and has been a wonderful mentor to all of us. She will be missed. However, we must look forward.”

Dr. Voorhees assumed her new role as Director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program and Chair of the Department on May 16, 2017.

She continued, “My goal is to continue to graduate excellent, well-prepared entry-level clinicians. The next area that I would like to improve is the research agenda among the faculty of the University of Jamestown Physical Therapy Program. This will create a well-rounded program in all aspects required by CAPTE, as well as continue to improve the quality of our graduates.”
