Jimmie Reflections – Jenna Brehm

As I write this, I have just attended my, seemingly, last Student Life Awards Ceremony. As I sit here thinking about my past couple of years at the University of Jamestown I am flooded by fond memories with great people. I was incredibly blessed by the folks that I got to work with, in particular, the students and staff members that graced the hallways of those eight residential buildings on campus.

If you have spent any time around me, you will know that I, as well as Gary Van Zinderen, will correct that D word (“dorm”) you use to describe where you live and here in my last communication to you, I will once again implore you to use the term “residence hall” or “hall”- it even has the same number of letters as that other word. The reason for this goes way beyond us just not liking that word, it speaks directly to the goal we have in residence life. We strive daily to make your room, floor, wing, and building more than just four walls- we believe this should be your home away from home- you spend more time here than anywhere else. College is an important time in your life and you have read countless tips and tidbits of advice from seasoned veterans on how to make the most of it. We, in residence life, believe that what happens outside the classroom is just as important in formulating those memories for you. The residence halls are so much more than just a place to sleep; we work hard to create decorations that welcome students to their new homes, we put on programs to hone up on important life skills, we are there late at night when you need someone to talk to, we facilitate the lifelong connections you will make to your hallmates, and if needed, we are there to support you through any crisis that may arise.

As we embark on this last week with students on campus, the residence life staff is entering their busiest time, not only do they have final programs (cram snacks, de-stressors) and check-outs, they are saying goodbye to graduating seniors and studying for finals themselves. The Resident Directors are wrapping up final checkouts and billing this weekend, along with celebrating the success of the students they have watched grow and develop over the years. This is such a whirlwind time for all of us, but I really wanted to take some time this week to slow down and relish in some of the amazing UJ moments that students and staff, Residence Life and beyond, have allowed me to be a part of over the last two years.

As I reflect back on my time here I am reminded of the sense of family that brought me to this campus in the first place; the camaraderie, and the willingness to assist each other no matter what. We truly have a good thing going up here on our hill that radiates to the surrounding community. What does being a Jimmie mean to me? It means never truly leaving, once a Jimmie, always a Jimmie! I may be moving on but I am not leaving, I will see you again at athletic events, plays, and concerts. I will forever hold a special place in my heart for all things University of Jamestown, thank you for letting me be a part of it.
