Stacey (Bohannan) Cox(’14): Soldier, Nurse

Source: Jamestown Sun

Stacey Cox(’14), a registered nurse at Sanford Health Jamestown 2nd Avenue Clinic, said she always wanted to be a soldier and rose to the rank of staff sergeant. Cox recalled that as a child growing up in California she was told she was too small and that women do not make good soldiers.

“I proved them wrong,” Cox said. “I loved being in the service.”

Cox enlisted in the U.S. Army and served on active duty from 1999 to 2006. She completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and then went to Fort Lee, Va., to train as a petroleum supply specialist and an automated logistical specialist.

After two enlistments, Cox started school in Colorado and later completed an associate degree at Illinois Central College. In 2012, she was accepted to University of Jamestown, where she completed her nursing degree and now works as a family practice nurse for Sanford Health.

On Memorial Day, Cox said that she likes to be with family and friends and thinks of it as a time to honor veterans past and present, “I like to reflect on the sacrifices that the soldiers and military make on a daily basis for our freedom—especially those who gave their lives.”

In her work, Cox said she enjoys talking to veterans who come into the clinic and believes it is good to relate to each other to help the quality of caregiving.
