Young Alumni Awards: Eric Schmid(’09) & Michael Perron(’07)

Congratulations to Michael Perron and Eric Schmid on being awarded young alumni medallions.

The medallions are given to UJ graduates of the last 12 years who possess the following qualities:

  1. Combined professional competence and skills with a commitment to broad-based learning and intellectual curiosity
  2. A commitment to lifelong learning through a continued effort to learn and grow as an individual
  3. Rendered valuable service to the local or wider community
  4. Good character in their relationship with other individuals and the community as a whole

Michael Perron ’07

Michael Perron is a leader at MNP, a national accounting, tax, and business consulting firm in Canada. He works in MNP’s Aboriginal niche in the Toronto office. He has worked in MNP’s management consulting, enterprise risk, and transaction advisory practices during his four years in Toronto and also has a role in developing MNP’s medical cannabis practice nationally.

Michael has worked in Calgary, also for MNP, and in Los Angeles, for Deloitte. He started his career working for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Vancouver, focusing on the mining and sports/entertainment industries. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance in 2007 from the University of Jamestown and his Masters of Accounting in 2008 from the University of Southern California.

In 2015, Michael was selected to be a part of the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference, an initiative bringing together Canada’s emerging leaders from business, government, education, and the cultural sector.

At the University of Jamestown, Michael played defensive back on the Jimmie football team and received Dakota Athletic Conference academic awards. He coached numerous sports for Special Olympics and was named Special Olympics Coach of the Year in 2006.

Michael’s community service includes Special Olympics, which he has coached in Jamestown, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Toronto, and supporting youth football development.

Eric Schmid ’09

Eric Schmid is a composite materials research engineer at the Composites and Polymer Engineering Laboratory at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology where he is pursuing his Ph.D. in nanoengineering. He earned bachelor of science degrees in mathematics and chemistry in 2009 from the University of Jamestown and a master’s degree in chemical engineering in 2012 from the University of North Dakota.

His work experience includes composite construction at NASA’s Glenn Research Center and Kennedy Space Center. After today’s ceremony, Eric is on his way to Kent, Wash., where he will start a new job at Blue Origin, a private aerospace manufacturer and spaceflight services company.

Eric is a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE) and is the Chair of Young Professionals for SAMPE North America. He is also a member of the Materials Research Society, National Society of Professional Engineers, and South Dakota Engineering Society.

At the University of Jamestown, Eric was a College Fellow in Mathematics and was a member of the Jimmie baseball team that claimed a 2008 Super Regional championship and NAIA World Series berth.

Eric’s community service includes science fair judging, science demonstrations and outreach, and officiating and coaching youth basketball and softball.
