Jarelle Miller(’16): NFL vs Graduation

Jarelle Miller(’16) was recently featured in an article at DailyRanger.com.

The article tells the story of how he was invited to the Minnesota Vikings rookie mini-camp on the day that he was to receive his diploma.

Go to graduation or go to mini-camp?

“I’m going to call the school and see if my mom and dad can get my diploma for me,” he told the Jamestown Sun. “Getting that diploma is big for me, but I couldn’t pass this (mini-camp) up. I’m the first person in my family to graduate from college. It’s something we’ve been looking forward to, hopefully the school can make an exception.”

UJ, did allow his family to receive his diploma for him, and he was included in a special ceremony later that week with other student athletes that were competing during the first graduation ceremony.

Under two percent of of NCAA football players make it to the National Football League. In the case of NAIA football, where the Jamestown Jimmies play, that percentage decreases significantly.

Only two Jamestown players have ever reached the NFL. John Webster, who also played at the University of Chicago, played in two games for the 1924 Racine Legion, and J.J. Syvrud, who played in one game for the New York Jets in 1999, defied the odds and made it to the big stage.

But, he’ll take away something from the University of Jamestown that may prove to be more important for his family and his life – a college degree.
