CREDENTIAL FILE UPDATE
Class of 2013 Education Seniors,
A credential file includes a profile sheet, 3-5 letters of recommendation and an unofficial transcript. The Career Center no longer offers credential files to graduates as of Fall Semester 2012. There have been changes in the recruitment and hiring process with the use of on-line applications and the electronic submission of application materials.
As a result, Career Centers now encourage self-managed credentials where applicants maintain their own credentials. To establish your file, have your cooperating/supervising teachers, education professors, coaches, etc. (your references) complete a letter of recommendation for you on their school letterhead. Be sure they date and sign the letter. Keep the original in a safe place and scan the document into a PDF that can be attached or uploaded when you apply online. Have at least three references available, as most application forms ask for three. Ask their permission before listing them as a reference and keep them informed of where you are applying.
Ask that they also keep a copy of the recommendation in case the district requires the evaluation to come directly from the writer. Since letters of recommendation more than four years old may have very little value to an employer, plan to create and maintain an up-to-date/current self-managed credential file.
Some districts accept an unofficial transcript when applying, but will require the official upon hiring. See http://www.uj.edu/TranscriptRequestInfo for transcript information.
Review the application instructions carefully as they may vary by school district and the process/system they use.
Job search, application material preparation, and interviewing tips are available on the L drive (rinde). Also contact our office for a copy of the Job Search Handbook for Educators.
