Robert "Bob" Scriba('68) dies at age 76

Robert “Bob” Scriba, 76, of Bemidji, MN died Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

To save for a trip to Japan to complete research, Bob took a one-year faculty appointment at Jamestown College in Jamestown, ND. He soon met Joelyn Bymoen, a faculty member in the nursing department. They later became engaged and were married on August 23, 1969 in New Rockford, ND. Bob and Joelyn made their home in Jamestown for 11 years before moving to Bemidji in the fall of 1979.

Bob Scriba was born to Hugo and Alice Scriba in Kobe, Japan. He was raised by his mother and spent his childhood playing in the streets of war-torn Japan. His early education took place at St. Michael’s, and in 1952 he began attending Canadian Academy in Kobe. After graduating from CA in 1959 Bob immigrated to the United States, arriving by ship in California. He washed windows to earn enough money for the bus fare to Ohio, where he began pursuing his undergraduate degree in industrial technology at Wilmington College. His junior year he took an art course, followed by an introduction to theatre class. He changed his major and in 1964 graduated with his BA in theatre. Bob then attended the University of Illinois and attained his master’s degree, also in theatre. He continued his studies, focusing on Asian theatre, at the University of Colorado in Boulder, while also acting as the assistant technical director at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival.

Bob taught theatre and speech at Bemidji State University for 23 years, retiring in 2002. He was active in the Paul Bunyan Playhouse and always enjoyed assisting with children’s theatre camps. While he was talented both on stage and in technical theatre, Bob will best be remembered as a passionate professor and mentor who cared deeply for his students.

When not in the theatre Bob enjoyed golfing, fishing, and being at the cabin with his family. He and Joelyn loved to entertain, often serving big Japanese dinners and sharing many laughs with friends and family late into the night. His favorite role was being a grandparent, and he loved spending time with his two granddaughters.
